The Perfect Biking Trail Near Leech Lake Mn

The Heartland State Trail is the perfect place to go biking this fall.  The trail, which you can access directly from our driveway, was one of the first rails-to-trails projects in the country and is the oldest trail of its kind in Minnesota.  The 49-mile trail connects the towns of Park Rapids and Cass Lake and also connects up to other regional trails in the area, like the Paul Bunyan State Trail. There are 10 particularly scenic miles of the Heartland State Trail between the towns of Walker and Akeley.  As you ride this portion of the trail, take in the scenic vistas of bogs and hidden lakes; views that are particularly beautiful in the fall.

While biking the Heartland State Trail is a wonderful way to spend a day in and of itself, there are also charming communities to explore along the trail. For example, in Dorset, the Restaurant Capital of the World, you’ll find incredible restaurants and the perfect lunch stop.  The world’s largest tiger muskie is in Nevis, while the friendliest Paul Bunyan–and the perfect photo op–is in Akeley.

As you continue down the trail, you’ll pass through northern hardwood forests and stands of jack, red, and white pine, as well as the spruce-fir forest community. There’s a wide variety of wildlife and birdwatching that can be enjoyed along the trail, too, including bald eagles, which have a large population in the Chippewa National Forest.
